The Hobbit

This trimester at our homeschool co-op I am teaching a literature class on The Hobbit.  With the recent release of the first movie, I thought it might be well-received... and I was right. I have six students in my class, and they are very excited about discussing the book... and the movie. Such enthusiasm makes the class a lot of fun to teach.

I've been very impressed with the Progeny Press Study Guide we are using. It's great for vocabulary development, literary analysis, a bit of grammar, and--the best part--tying in scriptural applications. The theme that it's bringing out is how God chooses unlikely, ordinary "heroes" for important "quests." My prayer is that this is a truth that will stick with the kids long after our class time is over.

Spokane Area Homeschool Conference

I'll be speaking at the Christian Family Home Educator's conference in Veradale, Washington this weekend. (That's in the Spokane area.) Due to space limitations there won't be a vendor hall, but I would be happy to visit with you there if you have questions about Sonlight!

My workshop:
You Can Do It!
Speaker: Karla Cook

You know your children better than anyone, and believe it or not, that qualifies you to be their best teacher. In this workshop I'll be offering encouragement and practical tips for new homeschool moms, or those who have been at it awhile and are now second-guessing their ability to teach their children. Different seasons call for different approaches. We'll talk about how to find the right curriculum for your family, how to know when to change, when to call in outside help, and when to use no curriculum at all!

What's the Worst Thing That Could Happen?

I'm blogging today on the Sonlight Blog about the nerve-wracking experience I had traveling to a homeschool convention on my own... and how I survived it!
